The Mistake Cycle

By now you may have heard of Misty she’s written a couple guest blog posts for me. Her journey has been an amazing one in less than two years going from small home studio to thriving home studio and a separate standalone boot camp location with some really cool things on the horizon (watch for her transformation profile coming up soon I don’t want to give it all away.)

Here’s another great post from her that will really hit home for many. If you’re at Fitness Business Summit in California next week I’m sure you’ll see Misty, and even get a chance to learn from her as she’ll be doing some teaching at the private Fitness Business Accelerator mastermind.

Take it aways Misty…

“I was born to make mistakes, not fake perfection”: Drake.

This statement kinda hit home today. It is a quiet afternoon and I am just catching up on some Facebooking (read: wasting time). Anyway, turns out it wasn’t all just a waste of time as I came across the above quote by Drake.
It’s a really good quote…..a really, really good quote.
Mistakes are often viewed as failures. In business we make mistakes all the time, and in business we are told to learn from them. Mentors, coaches, wise prophets have all told us to “learn from our mistakes, it is what makes us stronger”.
But in the moment, how do we remember to learn from this mistake instead of letting it take us down a path of negativity and despair?
How on earth do we learn from something we view as a failure? When this mistake happened you may have lost money, made a fool of yourself or bruised your ego.  All these emotional reactions to your business mistake make it very hard to view it as a lesson to be learned.
I used to want to stick a hot needle in my eye when people told me that “I need to learn from my mistakes”….My reaction would be to yell: “Go away and let me wallow in my misery.”
And see, herein lies the problem. The wallowing.
Wallowing makes us attract negative outcomes. Re-read that statement until it sinks in.
Wallowing is an act of self pity. We feel sorry for ourselves, we may even feel angry that we screwed up so badly. When we ruminate on negative issues, we simply attract to ourselves more negative issues.
Case in point: Money.
As business owners, we worry about money. We worry about how much we make, how much we spend, what we gross and what we net. We worry constantly about the state of our bank account.
We seem to always worry about not having enough.
Well guess what, if you always worry about not having enough money, you are NEVER going to have enough money. Why? Because we only attract to ourselves what we focus on the most.
With that being said, lets now go back to the “Mistake Cycle”….
See, if you focus on your mistakes, and wallow, then what do YOU think you are going to attract to yourself again and again in the very near future????
mistakeThat’s right: MORE mistakes.
Maybe you messed up a promo, clashed with a client or invested in a crappy product. Oh well. Start thinking about how to resolve the issue, find the silver lining and move on. Remember to tell yourself that we are here to make mistakes and not fake perfection as Drake so eloquently wrote. Don’t stop to waste time on how it has negatively impacted you. If you let yourself do this, you will ultimately attract another problem.

Go ahead and make mistakes – we are not perfect. Mistakes make us human and they give us an amazing learning arena to practice positive self talk and inspired action. Mistakes are just part of the big picture, let them happen as ultimately they just get you one step closer to massive success.
A wise mentor said to me once: “let it be beautiful”. I use this phrase often when things don’t go how I expected. Take things at face value and don’t ever let that mistake dictate how you *think* the future will play out.
